A GROWING LIST OF ADVICE FOR TOK ESSAYS

  • Definitions of key terms should be reviewed as you go along in the light of your examples and arguments.
  • You don't have to say better/worse or more/less when comparing things. You could just say 'different'.
  • Show don't tell. Examples are more powerful than unsupported statements.
  • Detail, illustrate, convince. The ToK essay is a persuasive work.
  • Spend a little time thinking about a KI you are exploring which is related to your title.
  • Don't be extreme. It is not usually true that two examples or WoKs or AoKs have nothing in common. It is more subtle to think about comparisons as well as contrasts.
  • In addition to the above, review the advice in the Theory of Knowledge Assessment Guide for the TOK Essay (pgs. 14-101), which can be checked out from the Textbook Depository.
